Stretching along the banks of the River Nile, the longest river in Africa, Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is a vast city where ancient traditions still hold up against the onslaught of modern life. On both banks of the River Nile stand the old Islamic architectures and modern buildings of earlier 20th century, Nicknamed "The City of a Thousand Minarets" for its preponderance of towering spirals. Cairo is also associated with Ancient Egypt due to its proximity to the Great Sphinx and the pyramids in adjacent Giza.
