Known as “the city of the hundred of gates”, Luxor is situated on the bank of the River Nile, South-Central part of Egypt. About 4,000 years ago, Luxor was the ancient city of Thebes. It has frequently been characterized as the "world's greatest open air museum", as the ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor stand within the modern city. Luxor was designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. The River Niles divide the country into two parts, the eastern part of the river was the religious and political centre of the ancient Egypt, but the western part of the river was the resting place for Pharaoh.
